Ga. Could Get Race to the Top Money By December

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia hopes to start getting federal "Race to the Top" money by mid-December.

State education official Erin Hames told the Georgia school board on Wednesday that the 26 school districts that joined the state's application for the federal funding are working on plans that will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education this month. Once those are approved, Hames said roughly $400 million will start flowing to the state.

Georgia was one of 13 states to win money in the federal grant competition this year.

The state has 180 school districts, but the two dozen that signed on to the application represent more than 40 percent of students in the state.

The grants aim to encourage states to take up innovative education reform to help raise student achievement and improve graduation rates.

Four Central Georgia school districts joined the application:  Bibb, Jones, Peach and Pulaski.
