Panel Wants State to Buy Oaky Woods Tract

The possibility of the state purchasing a 9,595-acre tract of wildlife habitat in Oaky Woods cleared a major hurdle Tuesday.

A subcommittee of the Department of Natural Resources recommended that the board move forward with the deal that's estimated to cost $28 million.

The subcommittee recommendation now goes to the full DNR board, which is scheduled to consider it Wednesday. If approved there, it'll go to the state properties commission, which would vote on the proposal later this month.

The Oaky Woods property is home to the midstate's black bear population, wild hogs, turkey and other wildlife.

John Trussell, a founder of the Save Oaky Woods organization, fears a natural treasure would be lost if the state doesn't buy the property and keep it as a wildlife preserve.

Trussell said the purchase price is about $3,000 an acre, a bargain for the state.

Dodge Co. Man Hosts Weekly Fish Fry For More Than 40 Years

Griff Bowen has had a lot of jobs in his 84 years.

"Construction work, I've built roads and houses. Bought timber for a long time," says Bowen.

But he's kept one of those for more than 40 years: hosting his buddies for the weekly fish-fry in Rhine.

He says it started on a Thursday in 1970 when he and a few other friends built a fish-fryer and decided to test it out.

They've been going strong ever since.

"Christmas,  New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, those are the only four days we miss," says Bowen.

That adds up to about 2,000 fish fries. And Bowen says, only the faces around the table have gotten old.

"It's never the love that we have for one another," says Bowen. "See that smile? And see that smile?"

Lowery Noles is a Thursday afternoon regular at Bowen's home in Dodge County.

Hawkinsville Family Recovering After House Fire

The family involved in the house fire in Hawkinsville this week is in high spirits, according to the mother, Lori Howard.

A fire engulfed the family's home around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.  Four of the family members managed to climb out of the home through windows.

Authorities say Howard's 16-year-old son, Doug Howard, heard his younger sister screaming inside and went back in to rescue her.

The mother credits the success of the rescue to the effort of the entire family. She says that while Doug went back into the house to rescue his sister, her son Joseph called 911.  She says that her other child Sammy went looking for a ladder to help get them both out of the house safely.
