Students to Participate in State Archery Tournament

On February 11, students from Dodge County Middle, Dodge County, Johnson County and Peach County high schools will participate in a state archery tournament.

This is the 5th Annual Georgia Nation Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) that will showcase fourth through 12th grade archers at the Great Outdoor Show.

The state tournament is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Resources Division.

More than 700 students are expected to participate in the state tournament.

Teams of 16-24 students from each school will compete in three separate divisions: elementary (4th-6th grade), middle (7th-8th grade) and high (9th-12th grade). Archers will shoot at 10- and 15-meter intervals in seven ?flights.? An awards reception will follow completion of the last flight about 6 p.m.

State Replaces Eastman YDC Director

The director of the state's Youth Development Campus in Eastman has been replaced after two corrections officers were injured in disturbances this week.

Amy Howell, the state commissioner of juvenile justice, visited the Eastman YDC Friday and replaced director Todd Weeks. That's according to Scheree Moore, director of the communications for the state agency.

"She's going in a new direction with new leadership," Moore said.

Weeks will be replaced by George Smith, who has 30 years' experience in corrections, she said.

Last Sunday, the Department of Juvenile Justice said a corrections officer suffered minor injuries after some of the young inmates refused to follow orders and local law enforcement was called in to help.

On Wednesday, Moore said, a second officer was injured in another disturbance. She would not describe the circumstances, saying the case is still under investigation.
