Dodge Commissioners: No Action on Airport Land Sale

The Dodge County Board of Commissioners met Monday evening in their regularly scheduled, 1st Monday, bi-monthly, meeting. With an above normal amount of audience in attendance, the Commissioners left everyone hanging without announcing a decision on the river land sale.

Commissioners handled their routine business of approving the minutes of previous meetings. They heard from Sheriff Lynn Sheffield that the new jail is still leaking despite recent attempts by the contractor to repair it. Sheffield further reported that potential Jailers are being interviewed for the new jail and it could be ready to open by the middle of June if the leaks are repaired.

Commissioners next heard from Frank Walthall in reference to the river land sale. Walthall told Commissioners that he had been the successful bidder on the property and presented his reasoning to the Board why he felt that they should not exercise their right of first refusal to purchase and to allow him to purchase it. Walthall explained that he was familiar with wetland mitigation issues and felt it would be a very costly endeavor for the Board to pursue. He also made a point that if allowed to purchase, the property would start generating tax revenue for the County. As it is, being owned by a Government entity, there are no taxes paid on the property.
