Bleckley School System To Celebrate National School Lunch Week | Community Spirit
At the September 17 Board of Education meeting, a proclamation was signed designating October 15-18 as National School Lunch Week in Bleckley County Schools. During the week, an emphasis will be placed on Georgia Grown products and students will have the opportunity to learn each day about the various agricultural products in Georgia.
Included in the Georgia Grown menu is wheat from the Cochran-based Butts Farm and provided through local business Back to the Basics 101. The Bleckley School Nutrition Program highlights a Georgia Grown product each month as well as the farmer. One school each spring participates in the Feed My School For A Week program, a joint effort between the Georgia Department of Educatoin and Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The Bleckley School District was recently recognized for having a high level of participation in the federally funded National School Lunch Program, that focuses on providing healthy, balanced meals to students. Said School Nutrition Director Dr. Kathy Peavy in a news release. "This recognition is a wonderful way to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the members of our nutrition staff and faculty. We are motivated to work harder in achieving our goals of serving more students the nutritious meals they deserve. However, our aim is not to only serve nutritious meals; but also to educate our students towards habits of healthy choices. Nutrition education is the key to developing healthy eating habits for a lifetime.”
During the 2011-12 School year, 74.4 percent of students at lunch, 36.2 breakast. As demonstrated by the chart below, the Bleckley School System exceeded the state average.
