Young Eagles Flight Program in Eastman
Young Eagles Flight Program in Eastman

Kids Become Young Eagles Recently, three Dodge County middle schoolers became the first Young Eagles at the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport. Ryan Clements, Ethan Gonzales, and Aiden Greer participated in the program new to Dodge County and coordinated by Charlie Spratt from Middle Georgia College Aviation College.

The Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. Since 1992, more than 1.6 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by more than 42,000 volunteer pilots.

The Young Eagles program is sponsored by the EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, an international aviation membership association founded in 1953 and headquartered in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Prior to boarding the aircraft, the Young Eagles toured the Air Traffic Control radar station and the Flight Tower to observe real Air Traffic Controllers in action.

After a pre-flight check of the aircraft pilot Charlie Spratt described the interior of the airplane including the instrument panel and safety procedures. During take-off and flight, the Young Eagles wore headphones and listened to the communications between the pilot and tower. The flight lasted 20 minutes and was an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.

In February 2013, the Young Eagles will be holding a rally at the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport to inspire youth to become pilots, pursue careers in aviation, and help more kids earn their Young Eagles certificate and flight log book. For more information on the Young Eagles program contact Charlie Spratt at (478) 448-4737.
