Cochran Native to Volunteer at Walt Disney Marathon | Community Spirit
Ansley Cranford knows races. The niece of BCHS cross country and track coach Shelly Cranford would often volunteer to keep stats or other duties while in high school. One race she recalls her uncle participating in was the Walt Disney World Half Marathon and Marathon. The race raises funds for leukemia reasearch. Cranford ran it in 2000 to help a church member battling the disease.
This Saturday Ansley, enrolled in the athletic training program at UGA, will be helping out at both races. She, along with other training program students and medical professionals, will be sttaioned at first aid tents along the route which spans through all four Disney Parks.
Cranford said that when their program was approached with getting to work at the race, " I knew it was something I wanted to do because of the cause it supports." She also has a personal interest in helping. Cranford was very fond of Bleckley Primary School Teacher Linda Faulk, who fell to the disease in 2008. Cranford got to know Faulk because her grandmother, Betty Cranford, was a parapro in Faulk's classrom.
"She always greeted me with the biggest smile and always had funny stories to share," Cranford recalled. To read more including how Faulk motivated Cranford to sign up for the National Bone Marrow Registry, click here.
