Cochran Chamber of Commerce Holds Annual Banquet

The Cochran-Blekckley Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet Thursday evening at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall. 

Highlights of the evening included the presentation of this year's STAR Student and Teacher (Matthew Mays and BCHS English Teacher Nancy Herrington), the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to local businessman Glenn Sawyer, and the instillation of the 2011 Chamber Board of Directors.

Bleckley Students Named to Honor Band

Eleven Bleckley middle and high school students were selected through audition to participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Eleventh District Honor Band. 

They competed against students in both public and private schools from all classifications. 

Students selected will participate in the District Honor Band event held at Baldwin County High School on February 11 & 12. 

Honor Band members are:  Geena Smith, Elizabeth Thompson, Alondria Clemons,  Hannah DeLoach,  Kelby Dykes,  Kaitlan Allen, Amber Burton, Clarinet,  Justin Bates, Baritone Saxophone, Jasmin Allen, Ronald Leek, Euphonium, Zack Songer.

Smith, Thompson, DeLoach, and Dykes were also selected to participate in the South Georgia Region Honor Band held at Valdosta State University, April 14-16.

Future Royal Cheerleader Camp Held

Possible future cheerleaders got to show what they learned at camp as participants in the Future Royals Cheerleading Camp performed Saturday during the girls basketball game between Howard and Bleckley. 

Campers got to stand in the bleachers and cheer the Lady Royals along with the squad during the first half. 

When the teams went to dressing room at halftime, the campers took the floor and displayed the cheers, chants, and jumps they learned over the past three days.

Miss Sweetheart Crowned During  East Laurens-Bleckley Game

Senior basketball player Rickenya Jenkins was crowned the 2011 Miss Sweetheart during halftime of the East Laurens-Bleckley basketball boys basketball game Friday night.  She was escorted by Jaquon Gainey.  The Sweetheart Court is made up of students from clubs and sports teams at BCHS.

Fifth Annual Biking Bleckley Metric 100 Febuary 26

The Cochran-Bleckley Chamber of Commerce will host the Fifth Annual Biking Bleckley on Febuary 26. 

The event is designed for families as well as both new and experienced cyclcists. 

Routes will go through southern country roads of Bleckley and surrounding counties. 

Routes of 15, 30, 50, and 62 miles are available. 

All routes are supported with maps, SAG's, and refreshment breaks. 

Registration is $25 before Febuary 16, $30 after February 16..  Registration before Febuary 16 guarantees a T-shirt. 

All fees are non-refundable.

Rides begin at 8:30 a.m. from the parking lot of the Cochran-Bleckley Chamber of Commerce. 

The Biking Bleckley Cycling club cordinates the event.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Scheduled

Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Scheduled

On Monday, January 17, 2011 at 1 p.m. Main Street in Eastman will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  

Hosted by the United Concerned Citizens for Unity and the NAACP, this year's parade features the theme "Completing the Dream."

Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place.

Local Football Team Works with Salvation Army

The Middle Georgia Pitbulls, a Bleckley-based semipro football team, recently completed charity work with the Middle Georgia Salvation Army.  According to a statement released by the team, they were part of the Salvation Army's "Adopt-A-Family" program.  

The statement said they collected over $645 dollars along with toys, clothes and food which were given to families in need.
