Ocmulgee Symphony Orchestra to Perform at the Opera House

The Ocmulgee Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Hawkinsville Opera House on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.

The orchestra will perform pieces such as Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" and Willcock's "Christmas Carols for Choir and Orchestra."

Tickets are $30 each.

BCHS Musical to Benefit Muscular Dystrophy Assocation

The Bleckley County High School Drama Department will have its Christmas show "It's Christimas time again, and it's all for Ben" on Dec. 13 and 16 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students. 

Proceeds will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in honor of Ben Masters, son of Bleckley County High School Principal Dr. Michelle Masters.

Kids Yule Love: Day 4 of 13 Days of Giving

Kids Yule Love is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 and its mission is to provide Christmas presents and a message of hope to the less fortunate children in the Middle Georgia area.

Kids Yule Love partners with businesses in the Middle Georgia area who either want to become a sponsor or a  Kids Yule Love drop point.  Kids Yule Love also serves people throughout the year with Baskets of Joy at Easter, Kids School Tools during the school year & the Smoke Detector Program.

Bleckley County prepares for 2011 Relay for Life

The Relay for Life wrap-up and kickoff was held in the fellowship hall of Lakeview Baptist Church last week.  It was a time to recognize teams for their accomplishments and start planning for 2011. 

Bleckley County raised $47,465. 

The top earning team was FairyTale Nails who raised $7,243.  Amye's Angels was a close second raising $6,985. 

Linda Warren is this year's chairperson.  She introduced other committee members in attendance.  American Cancer Society senior community manager Heather Gilbert, who works with area RFL events, said that if Bleckley County raised $100,000 this year, she would shave her head.  She had told Houston County that she would do that if they raised $400,000.

Wes Taylor Selected as 2011 National Secondary Principal of the Year

Dodge County native, William Wesley "Wes" Taylor, was recently named the 2011 Metlife/National Association of Secondary School School Principals National High School Principal of the year.

Taylor, who serves as principal of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, is the son of Bill and Sue Taylor of Eastman.

Georgia Governor Perdue congratulated Taylorand said,  "(Taylor's) dedication to enhancing the learning experience at Lowndes High School shows not only in their increasing graduation rates or AP participation, but in the strong relationship building and individual focus that truly helps students thrive."

The City of Eastman proclaimed Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, William Wesley Taylor Day in the City of Eastman, and a reception honoring Taylor will be held at the First Baptist Church social hall on Sunday, November 21, 2010 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.

Church to Host Fourth Annual "Drive Through Bethlehem"

Bethany Baptist Church will have its fourth annual "Drive Through Bethlehem" event December 10-12 from 6-8 pm. 

Motorists line up in the middle school parking lot and will drive through (with headlights off) through a reinactment of the Christmas story.  The town (set up in the church parking lot) will feature a nativity scene,  Roman soldiers, live animals, shops, and much more.
