A Final Tribute for Coach Sam Barrs

A reception was held Saturday afternoon for retiring BCHS football coach Sam Barrs inside the common area of the high school Saturday afternoon. 

It was a time to relax and celebrate Barrs' career after what had been an emotional morning for the football program.  This year's team served as honorary pall bearers at the funeral of statistician Chris Harris. 

Barrs spoke at the service. 

The afternoon reception was a drop-in affair attended by Barrs and family members, and included visits from former players and friends.

April is Confederate History and Heritage Month. This proclamation was signed by former  Georgia Governor Perdue  as well as the Senate and House of Representatives in Senate Bill #27. That bill was signed in 2009 and took effect for the first time in April 2010.

Local Church Holds Annual Easter celebration

Cochran's New Life Church Of God held their fourth annual "Easter Under The Lights" celebration Friday evening. 

The event featured food, activities, and games, all free.  New Life Church Of God engages in several community outreach programs including the "Esther Project" which gathers book bags and school supplies for needy families. 

Estimates put Friday's crowd at almost 400 people.

7th Annual Rescue Day to Feature Fun for Families and Pets

 

Fifteen animal rescue groups from around the Middle Georgia area are gathering together April 21 for the Seventh Annual Rescue Day at Tractor Supply Company in Byron, a Save a Pet news release says.

Along with the rescue groups, others are joining them to help get pets adopted, keeping your pet health and well trained, and sharing fun activities to do with your dog.

Along with pet adoptions, there will be a vaccination clinic, children’s fun dog show, pony rides, dog training demonstrations, dog cart demonstrations and rides and information about involved in pet therapy.

MGC Wins Tuesday, Gov. Deal Scheduled to Throw Out Opening Pitch in April

The Warriors won a tight conference game over West Georgia on Tuesday, April 3rd by a score of 3-1.

Middle Georgia got a stellar pitching performance from Joseph Boatright as he earned the win. Boatright threw 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and a walk. Boatright also struck out 8 West Georgia hitters. JB Wendelken took over in the 9th inning to earn the save with a groundout and 2 strikeouts.

The MGC offense was held in check in the runs department, but was able to collect 10 hits in the game. Blake Shouse, Trey Benefield, and Matt Fears led the way with 2 hits apiece. Bo Way, Jake Fields, Dylan Kelly, and Khirus Ware each added a hit in the game. Kelly had a 2-out RBI early in the game to put MGC on the board, Way followed with the go-ahead 9th inning RBI. Shouse followed Way in the 9th with an insurance RBI.
