February Marks American Heart Month

The Medical Center of Georgia plans to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and stroke through a series of events throughout February.

The events correspond with the American Heart Association's designated February as American Heart Month.

That's according to a Medical Center of Central Ga. news release.

The following is a schedule of events for Central Ga.:

Saturday: Heart & Soul North will take place at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1530 Highway 41 South, in Barnesville from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. MCCG will provide AngioScreen® and other cardiovascular screenings, and physician speakers on the hour.  

AngioScreen® costs $50. Please call 1-800-627-2393 to make an appointment.

Thursday, Feb. 17: HeartFest 2011 will join Dodge County Hospital in Eastman from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. to provide free cardiovascular screenings for the hospital’s annual Heart Health Day.

Special Service at Local Church Draws Crowd

"UnAshamed: Misfit VS Misfit" was held Tuesday at House of Grace Church in Cochran. 

It was a special service combining the church's youth group "UnAshamed" with the college ministry. 

Special music was provided by Christian rap aritst Issac GI Manus and Chris Durso, youth minister at Christ Tabernacle, was the guest speaker. 

Organizers say over 200 people attended the service.

The Dodge Arts Guild released a schedule of 2011 events for the Magnolia Music and Medicine Show.

Dec. 10   Special guest to be announced

Tickets are $10, and can be purchased from any Dodge Arts Guild member, from the Eastman-Dodge County Chamber of Commerce, and at the door prior to showtime.

Career Fair for High School Students

Area high school sophomores will participate in a career fair Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at the Agricenter in Perry. 

The 15th annual Dr. Maxx Career Fair Scavenger Hunt will take place in the McGill Marketplace building from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m, a Houston County Board of Education news release says.

Approximately 1,000 students from Houston, Dooly, Peach and Pulaski counties will attend. 

The purpose of the event is to help students plan for their future. 

The career fair will inform them about job opportunities and the requirements for different occupations, providing insight into a variety of careers.

Former Royal Singers to Perform at High School Auditorium

A "Where Are They Now" concert featuring former Royal Singers who have gone on to excel in music will be held at the BCHS auditorium Febuary 5.  Show time is 7 p.m.  Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students.

Bleckley Students Named to Honor Band

Eleven Bleckley middle and high school students were selected through audition to participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Eleventh District Honor Band. 

They competed against students in both public and private schools from all classifications. 

Students selected will participate in the District Honor Band event held at Baldwin County High School on February 11 & 12. 

Honor Band members are:  Geena Smith, Elizabeth Thompson, Alondria Clemons,  Hannah DeLoach,  Kelby Dykes,  Kaitlan Allen, Amber Burton, Clarinet,  Justin Bates, Baritone Saxophone, Jasmin Allen, Ronald Leek, Euphonium, Zack Songer.

Smith, Thompson, DeLoach, and Dykes were also selected to participate in the South Georgia Region Honor Band held at Valdosta State University, April 14-16.
