MGC Presents 'Anna in the Tropics'

MGC Presents 'Anna in the Tropics'

“Anna in the Tropics” opened March 2 at the Russell Hall Theater at the Middle Georgia College Cochran campus. Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play tells the story of a Cuban family that owns a cigar factory in Ybor City, Fl., in 1929 whose domestic problems come to light when a lector is hired to read to the workers as they roll cigars.

The play also explores the conflict between the old traditional methods of production and the newer, machine reliant ways as the family struggles to survive in the beginnings of the Great Depression.

The play was presented by MGC’s Encore Players and Delta Psi Omega, and will run March 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and March 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Russell Hall Theater.

Admission for “Anna in the Tropics” is free for MGC students, faculty, and staff, $5.00 for the general public, and $3.00 for seniors.

'New Paintings' Opens at MGC

'New Paintings' Opens at MGC

An art exhibit “New Paintings” recently opened at Middle Georgia College’s Peacock Gallery in Russell Hall.

Artist Kip Bradley gave a gallery talk to students, faculty and community members last month.

A Middle Georiga College (MGC) news release says “New Paintings” is a collection of oil enamel of painted geometric shapes on bent, folded and rolled aluminum. Bradley’s works play with depth and perception in a shallow space by playing with materials, said Charlie Agnew, an associate professor of art at MGC and the Gallery Director of Peacock Gallery. “The paint has a physical presence and jumps off the material,” he said.

Bradley’s works contain a visual contradiction between the surface and the flatness of its images with the illusion of depth and space created by the material, leaving the viewer to interpret the images themselves, according to his artist statement.
