187 years and counting: Hawkinsville Church Celebrates Homecoming

187 years and counting: Hawkinsville Church Celebrates Homecoming

They've come along way ... the First Baptist Church of Haynesville, located on Ga. 341 S in between Hawkinsville and Perry, celebrates its 187th homecoming celebration at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.

And Senior Pastor David B. Fisher is excited. Fisher said, "We've come a long way - we're an old church but we have a new vision."

The Bradys, a Southern Gospel music group from Dothan, Alabama, will be the special musical guests at the event. With more than 20 years in the music industry, their songs have been consistently on the charts and aired on radio stations across the country. Their song, "Here I Am," was performed by The Hoppers and received two song of the decade and year awards, and was nominated  for a Dove award in the 1990s.

Bleckley Co. Couple Takes Love of Coffee To Next Level - Ministry

James Holland just celebrated his 78th birthday. And for as long as he can remember, or at least for 50 or more years, he has been a coffee drinker.

His wife, Gerry, 76, doesn't remember the first time she ever drank coffee, but, on National Coffee Day, September 29, 2011, she said, "I remember when it was. I was in my 20s, and it was right after we got married ... we've been married for 58 years ... and someone had given us a percolator for a wedding gift ... and on our first day in our home, when he had to go to work, I got up and made us a cup of coffee."

Gerry Holland smiled, "We didn't drink much then." It was not until the couple moved to Marshall, Texas shortly after they got married to attend East Texas Baptist College (now East Texas Baptist University) that "we really got hooked ... that was when everyone was making pots of coffee to study by and stay awake."

Dodge Co. Woman Makes Plarn Bags for Operation Christmas Child

Dodge Co. Woman Makes Plarn Bags for Operation Christmas Child

Marilynn Sanders sits at her kitchen table a creation of red and white in front of her and a plastic crochet needle in her hand. She is doing a single crochet stitch, with her ball of yarn laying on the table beside her.

Her dogs, Katie and Bo, lay on the floor underneath th kitchen table.

Upon closer inspection of the bag that Sanders is crocheting, a revelation hits the onlooker. The yarn isn't yarn – well, not the yarn that one stereotypically would expect to see someone crocheting from.

Sanders' ball of yarn is made of plastic – recycled plastic shopping bags. This one from Target. This yarn is called plarn, and is made out of cutting strips from recycled shopping bags and garbage bags.
