Bleckley Native Shares Peach Recipe

Bleckley Native Shares Peach Recipe

Georgia has long been known as the “Peach State.” In fact, Georgia received this designation during the three decades following the Civil War when peaches began being shipped and sold outside of the South. Franciscan monks first introduced them to St. Simons and Cumberland Islands along the coast in 1571. By the 1700’s, peaches were being cultivated by the Cherokee Indians. Peaches began being marketed in Georgia in the mid-1800s and soon thereafter were being sold and shipped to other states. Georgia now grows over 40 commercial varieties of peaches and produces 2.6 million bushes annually.
