Royals Survive Scare in Region Football Opener | HS Sports
Last year, Bleckley had little trouble with Putnam County in their region football opener. But as the saying goes "That was last year."
Trailing 12-6 in the second quarter, D'Andre Pitts connected with Austin Simmons on a 26-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left to put Bleckley back on top. After recovering a Putnam fumble in the third, Tije'a Randall's one yard touchdown run made it 21-12 with 9:35 left.
Pitts picked off a pass late in the third. Backed up on their one, Putnam wrapped up Tavon Ross in the end zone and was given a safety. The Eagles got within 21-20 on a 24-yard touchdown pass with less than eight minutes left in the game but missed their second point after touchdown.
Mario McClendon had a pair of third down conversions, a 22-yard reception and 19-yard run, to keep Bleckley's next drive going. It was capped on Damien Farrow's thirty yard touchdown run with 3:40 left. Ross picked off a pass when Putnam went for it on fourth and ten from their 17. Anthony Wright iced the game on a 42-yard touchdown run with 1:36 left.
BC won 35-20. Antavias Robertson had seven carries for 90 yards and 108 return yards. Simmons caught two balls for 39 yards. Region play continues October 4 in Roberta versus Crawford County. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
