Sports fans in Cochran had plenty to cheer about in 2013. There were titles and playoff appeances for middle and high school teams, an all star team won district, and Middle Georgia State College's first club football season saw them win a conference title. Here are some of the sports highlights from 2013.
BCHS basketball have deep playoff runs- Both the Royals and Lady Royals had their best seasons in school history. The girls won thei first region title since 1991 and advanced to the elite eight. The boys finished second in region and made it to the state title game, falling to Greater Atlanta Christian.
BCMS girls win region basketall title- The Lady Barons won a region title in girls basketball for the first time since 1968 defeating Dublin in the title game.
BCHS footbll team gets home playoff win- After two straight exits in round one, the Royals won their first playoff game since 2006 with an overtime victory against Bryan County. It was the first home playoff win in school history.
MGSC Football wins conference title- The Middle Georgia State College club football team edged OC Tech in Cochran to win the South Atlantic Conference title. Former Royal Ken Hughes saw time at quarterback after an injury to starter Kion Button. Hughes threw a touchdown pass in the victory. MGSC fell to Coppin State in the NCFA title game.
BCHS baseball wins region- For the first time since 1997, the Royals won a regon baseball tile beatng Lamar County.
Runnin' Royls do well at state- For the second straight year, the BCHS cross country teams were the top public schools at the AA state meet wth the boys finishing third and the girls coming in fourth.
Bleckey All Star Team finishes third at state- The 11-12 boys all star baseball team won Class C district and finished third at state. It was the best finish for a rec. department all star team since the 11-12 girls finished state runner up in 2006.
