Lady Royals Win, Royals Lose, 4-AA Title Games | HS Sports
Two of the biggest games in recent memory were on deck Saturday evening in Cochran as the BCHS boys and girls looked to win region titles. Each program had long droughts, the girls last title came in 1991, the boys in 1984. Opposing both teams was longtime Class A basketball power Taylor County.
Up eight at halftime, a 12-3 run make it 42-35. Bleckley though scored only three points over the final three minutes as the Lady Vikings got within seven. Tia Troup helped put the game away in the fourth, scoring eight of her career best 34 points in the final two plus minutes in a 64-46 win.
Head coach Jenny Manning said Troup's fourth quarter was needed "That's what we need, somebody to step up and be a leader in times like that."
Trailing by five at halftime, Ken Hughes scored six points in the third to help the Royals to a seven-point lead. It was down to two by the fourth. The Vikings went ahead by five again in the fourth before Bleckley rallied. After cutting it to one on a Mario Beck basket, Ken Hughes made it 60-59 with under three minutes left.
Leading by two with a minute left, Taylor tied the score. Bleckley got the ball with around 30 seconds left but turned the ball over. They got it back thanks to a quick defensive play but turned it over again with six seconds remaining. A foul was called with 3.7 ticks left on the clock. The Vikings sank a pair of free throws. A last-second three was short as the Royals saw their 21-game winning streak end 63-61.
BCHS shot 45 percent (10 of 22) from the foul line including eight second half misses. Beck scored 24. Hughes finished with 13. Rydealous Taylor scored 14. The Lady Royals will host Cook County Tuesday at 6 pm. The Royals host Thomasville Wednesday at 6.
