Royals Clinch State Berth with Win Versus Swainsboro

It was a rematch of last year's 3-AA semifinals Wednesday in Eastman when Bleckley took on Swainsboro.  Though the Royals won during the regular season by 20, they were up just one at halftime on a Dytrez Nelson layup as time expired.  BC pushed their lead to five in the third but the Tigers answered with an 11-3 run.  Foul trouble became an issue in the fourth as both Mario Beck and Ken Hughes picked up their fourth.  Swainsboro erased a four-point Royal lead with 3:04 left.  Rydealous Taylor and Quan Fleming would score five each as BCHS ended the game on a 12-3 run to win 60-51.

Taylor had 18.  Marcus Mack scored 17.  The Royals clinch a state playoff berth for the second straight year.  BC plays East Laurens in the region semifinals Friday at 8:30 pm.

Ken Hughes scored the first nine points of the second as the Royals used a 15-5 run to open up what was a three-point game. 

Third-seeded Bleckley never looked back as they went on to win 80-49.  Hughes had 15 points and seven rebounds. 

Derrick Farrow scored 12.  Mario Beck added 11 with eight rebounds. 

BCHS plays second-seeded Swainsboro Wednesday at 8:30 pm. 

The game will be a rematch of last year's semifinal.

Lady Royals Advance in Region 3-AA Tournament

Fourth-seeded Bleckley County led for much of their region tourney opener versus third-seeded Southeast Bulloch Tuesday. 

Up by 10 points in the fourth, the Lady Jackets used a 12-2 run to tie things at 31 with 43 seconds left.  The game would go into overtime. 

In OT, the Lady Royals traied by three with 40 seconds left when Dewanda Blackshear hit a three to again tie things.  In the second overtime, BC scored the first six points to clinch a 45-38 win.  Blackshead scored 10.  Tia Troup led with 12 points.

Local Coach Honored with TARLAVSKY-PRICE YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Greer Foundation today announced it has awarded the TARLAVSKY-PRICE YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD, an honor offered in recognition of exceptional service to youth in memory of two fallen warriors, to Jason Griner. Coach Griner, the leader and driving force behind the South Georgia Athletic Club’s wrestling program, has coached and mentored thousands of youth wrestlers spanning more than 10 years.

His incredible dedication to the sport of wrestling, as well his wrestlers, keeps him on the road traveling to tournaments north of Atlanta throughout the winter months. During the summer,

he travels with his wrestlers to national level tournaments as far as Iowa and North Dakota. Jason’s commitment to the sport and his team cannot be overstated. Through his direct efforts, Valdosta has enjoyed several state champions as well as national champions selected for the USA National Junior Freestyle and Greco Roman teams.

Offense Cold as BCHS Swept in Regular Season Finale

BCHS ended the regular season on a down note Tuesday in Dublin. 

Both teams had season-low point totals as the Lady Royals lost 34-20 and the Royals lost 57-32. 

With the losses, Bleckley's girls finish fourth, the boys third in 3B-AA.  Region tournament play begins February 14 at Dodge County High School. 

The Lady Royals play at 4 pm with the Royals playing that night at 8:30.

BCHS Splits Home Finale with Tigers

It was senior night Friday when Bleckley welcomed Swainsboro to Cochran in a crossover matchup between the Tigers of 3A-AA and Royals of 3B-AA.  In girs action, the Lady Royals led for much of the game, but fell beind 38-37 with about two minutes left.  Alexis Woodfaulk's jumper with 1:33 remaining put Bleckley back on top.  Swainsboro would retake the led with less than a minute to go.  Down three with under 30 seconds left, a Woodfaulk basket drew the Lady Royals within one.  However, they would not get a foul to stop the clock.  The Lady Tigers got an easy layup and won 44-41.  Woodfaulk scored 10.  BC's free throw shooting was 6 of 16.
