Bleckley Edges Veterans to Advance to Tourney Title Game

Rydealous Taylor scored 15 points, Mario Beck had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Ken Hughes finished with a double double (10 points, 10 rebounds) as the Royals edged host Veterans High School 64-63 to advance to the title game of the VHS Holiday Tournament. 

With 3:30 left, Bleckley led 57-51.  Veterans would chip away at the lead as BCHS went 6 for 11 from the foul line and was held without a basket over the final three plus minutes. 

Up 64-61 with two seconds left, a Warhawk player deflected the inbounds pass.  After VHS made two free throws, BC simply inbounded the ball as the final .2 ticked off.

The Royals play Luella High School for first place Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

It was a rough Houston County Bear Braw for the Royals.  BCHS went 1 and 2 in tournament games and averaged just 47 points per game after averaging 59 in their first six.  Tuesday the team looked to get off to a better start versus Perry in the Veteran's High School Christmas Tournament. 

Trailing 10-7 after one quarter, BCHS took control with a 15-4 run.  Up nine to begin the third, Perry got within two before a 10-2 finish made it 40-30 going to the fourth.

Leading 42-30, the Panthers went on a 15-4 run to go ahead 45-42 with 4:17 remaining.  Rydealous Taylor answered with a three. 

He would hit another and Mario Beck scored 11 points as BCHS ended the game on a 19-6 run to win 61-51.  Bleckley shot 53 percent from the field.  Beck had 25 points and seven rebounds.  Taylor scored 10.  BC will play the winner of Veterans High School and Hawkinsville Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

BCHS took the court Tuesday morning at the Houston County Bear Brawl looking to avoid going winless.  It was a rematch of seven days ago for the Lady Royals as they took on Northside.  After leading for much of the third quarter, Bleckley trailed 42-38 going to the fourth.  Unlike last week when BCHS was able to cut a 16-point deficit to six, a scoring slump proved costly in a 54-45 loss.  Cam Tillman and Tia Troup both had 13 points.  Myesha Moore scored 10.

The Royals final  tourney opponent was Heritage High School of Conyers.  Down 1-3 points for most of the game, Bleckley had a 36-34 lead going to the fourth.  It would grow to seven before Heritage got within one with 1:30 left.   BC would hit enough of its free throws (including Savon Walters going 3 of 4 from the line) to win 50-45.  Mario Beck had 15 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

At the Bear Brawl Monday, it was a rematch of six days ago in boys action when the Royals took on Northside. 

Down 38-27 in the third quarter, Savon Walters three capped an 11-0 Royal run that tied the score.  BCHS though would be outscored 27-9 from then on as they lost 65-48.  Mario Beck had 15 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks.  Rydealous Taylor scored 10.  Bleckley shot 35 percent from the field.

In girls action, the Lady Royals took on Monroe High School of Albany.  Trailing 10-2, a Cam Tillman three and five quick Dewanda Blackshear points tied the score.  The Tornadoes scored the final four points to lead 14-10 after one. However, an 18-4 second quarter run by Monroe was followed by an 18-4 third quarter.  Bleckley lost 61-33.  Blackshear scored seven.

Bear Brawl games conclude Tuesday at Houston County High School.  Game times are 10 am for girls, 11:30 for boys.

Though Rydealous Taylor had 20 points and went 5 of 8 from three-point range, the Royals shot 36 percent as a team.  BCHS suffered their first loss of the season in a 49-44 defeat to Warner Robins at Saturday's Houston County Bear Brawl.  The Lady Royals had an 11-point halftime lead versus ninth-ranked Warner Robins in their Bear Brawl opener.  A 10-0 Demonette run proved to be the difference as BC fell 56-50.

Tia Troup had 17 points.  Cam Tillman and Myesha Moore both scored 12.  Bleckley continues Bear Brawl play Monday.  The boys play at 11:30 am, girls follow.

The Lady Royals defense held Telfair County without a basket in the first half.  BCHS led by as many as 30 points in the second as they easily won 48-20.  Alexis Woodfaulk scored 10 points.  Brianna Webb and Brittany Chancey each added seven off the bench.

Rydealous "Spud" Taylor went 5 of 8 from three point range in the first half as the Royals led 44-14.  Taylor ended up 6 of 9 with 18 points as the Royals won 68-25.  Ken Hughes had 13 points.  Dytrez Nelson had eight assists and six of Bleckley's 20 steals.  Off the bench, Dominic Ligon had nine points and four rebounds.  Dre Pitts scored eight with four steals.

BCHS plays in the Houston County Bear Brawl Saturday.  Both teams play Warner Robins boys tipping at 2:30 pm.

 The wrestling season is in full swing as Dodge County had teams competing across the state last week. In Middle School action, the Grapping Warriors traveled to Telfair County to battle with the Jr. Trojans and Montgomery County.
