Athlete of the Week: DeMario Beck

DeMario Beck is a young man of very few words on and off the court.

The 6'6" Bleckley County hoops star is averaging a double-double this season with 18 points and 12 rebounds per game. He's not doing bad since he just started playing basketball 2 years ago as a freshman, and before he was cut from the middle school team.

DeMario is a quiet workhorse, saying very little, "Talking takes you out of your game. Just play your game." His actions on the hardwood speak louder than his words.

Beck's coach Cliff Kerbo echoes DeMario, "Very few words but alot of action. He's been in our program for 3 years and has improved tremedously."

DeMario puts his grades first because he wants to pursue his dream of playing at the next level, but he knows that won't happen unless he puts his grades first. "Grades come first," Beck stresses.

Boys Rally Late as BCHS Splits with Houston County

The Lady Royals had an eight-point lead at Houston County Tuesday but trailed 31-24 at halftime due to a 15-0 HoCo run.  Bleckley would never trail by more than eight points but couldn't get any closer than three as they lost 57-51.  Myesha Moore had 16 points.  Tia Troup scored 11.  Cam Tillman added 10.

After jumping out to an early four-point lead, the Royals would trail by as many as eight points.  After going ahead in the third on a Mario Beck basket, Bleckley would build a six-point lead in the fourth.  The Bears scored eight straight to go ahead 38-37 with 3:40 left.  Down 40-39 with 28 seconds left, Rydealous Taylor got a steal and completed a three-point play to put Bleckley ahead.  Ken Hughes scored the final four points as BCHS rallied 46-42.

Bleckley Splits Home Games with Dodge County

Bleckley Splits Home Games with Dodge County

The Lady Royals and Dodge County Squaws were tied at 14 after one quarter of play Friday.  DCHS went ahead on a 13-2 run.  Tia Troup's three with less than a minute left made it 27-19 DC at halftime.  Bleckley had a cold shooting second half scoring three points in the third, eight in the fourth.  Dodge won 50-30.  Troup had 12 points.

The Royals led 46-34 going into the fourth quarter of their game with Dodge on back to back three's by Marcus Mack.  It appeared BCHS would be again going through a fourth-quarter slump as they went almost five minutes without a basket.  However, free throw shooting, something the team had stuggled with at times this year, proved to be a strength.

BCHS Evens Subregion Record with Sweep of East Laurens

BCHS Evens Subregion Record with Sweep of East Laurens

In boys action, East Laurens took their first lead since early in the third quarter 55-54 with 2:40 left.  Ken Hughes' three-point play with 53 seconds left put the Royals ahead.  Mario Beck's second dunk of the game with 35 seconds remaining sealed a 60-55 win.  Hughes had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Beck scored 19 with eight rebounds.  Rydealous Taylor finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

GHSA Class A to Have Two State Champions

The Georgia High School Association voted Tuesday in Macon to create separate public-school and private-school playoff systems for Class A athletics and declare two Class A champions.

The motion passed 36-12 with one abstention.

The new system will take effect next school year.

The GHSA held a special called meeting Tuesday at the Macon Centreplex to discuss reclassification issues across the state.

GHSA Director Ralph Swearingin said, "We know that not everybody is going to be happy, but what it's going to mean is that private schools will be assured they have a champion." He called it a win-win situation for both private and public schools.

Coach Mark Ledford of the Wilcox County Patriots called the current state of class A an "unlevel playing field." He is certain that now the rural schools will be able to find out who is the best among other rural schools in each sport.
