Milan man charged with 1998 murder
News

Ricky Lamar Jones, 53, is charged with murder and concealing a death, according to Todd Lowery, special agent in charge of the GBI's Eastman office.

He said investigators have not yet found the body of his alleged victim, William Marcus Walters, who would be about 48 today.

On Tuesday, teams from the GBI and Dodge sheriff's office dug for evidence in Jones' yard on Sweet Home Church Road in Milan.

Lowery said they've sent evidence to a GBI crime lab, but he suspects the remains found are dog bones.

"At this point, we don't think we have found a body or any part of a body, but we have looked," he said.

He said a witness recently tipped the Dodge County Sheriff's Office about Walter's death. He would not identify the witness or say why they came forward after 15 years.

Even though the body has not been found, Lowery said the two agencies have developed probable cause to charge Jones, who was married to Walters' sister.

Apparently, family members were not clear on Walters' whereabouts, he said.

According to the GBI, there was never a missing person's report filed on Walters, and no investigation until now.

"He was believed to be somewhat of a drifter, and that may have kept people from thinking he was missing," said Lowery.

He said they're still investigating some aspects of the case, including the motive and circumstances. Lowery says they're also wondering why Jones' family didn't report Walters missing in 1998.
