Sarah Winans of Eastman charged with insurance fraud and forgery. | News
A Dodge County insurance agent charged with fraud and forgery has turned herself in to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office and bonded out.
Officials charged 41-year-old Sarah Amber Winans of the ABC Insurance Agency in Eastman with seven counts of insurance fraud and three counts of forgery. Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said, "Our investigation indicates that this agent was apparently preying on citizens, many of them farmers in the middle Georgia region. We believe Sarah Winans pocketed her clients' money for homeowners and crop insurance coverage instead of forwarding the premiums to the insurance companies."
Investigations into Winans' agency have been going on for the past several months. Winans allegedly defrauded at least $16,000 from her clients.
WMAZ spoke to two women who say Winans took thousands from them that never went to insurance companies.
Officials are still investigating.
People who have conducted business with Winans and have doubt about their coverage can call Commissioner Hudgens' Consumer Services Division at 800-656-2298. They are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
