Royals Clinch Playoff Berth With Win at Dodge

Over the past three weeks, Bleckley's offense had been carrying the day.  They'd scored 30 or more points in each of those games.  However, a nasty Dodge defense combined with multiple injuries (Zack Moe was limited due to a deep thigh bruise, Frankie Mullis was recovering from a hip pointer, Mario McClendon was out with a sprained ankle, Tavon Ross played with an injured thumb) made for a defensive, turnover-filled first half.  BCHS had four first-half turnovers, Dodge three.

Blake Lucas broke a scoreless tie in the third with a 47-yard field goal.   The Dodge longsnapper sending the ball over their punters' head set the Royal offense up on Dodge's 25 late in the third quarter.  With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Lucas got his second field goal of the game, a 21-yarder to make it 6-0.  Dodge picked off an attempted deep ball on BC's next possession.  Starting from their own 13, they mounted their best drive capped by a D'Eric McNair touchdown run to give the Indians their first lead.

With four minutes remaining, the Royals mounted a rally.  A drive that had reached Dodge's 34 appeared in jepoardy after a third down sack.  On 4th and 18 from Bleckley's 42, Ken Hughes connected with Dre Pitts on a 55 yard touchdown pass.  Pitts caught the two-point conversion to put BC ahead 14- with 1:54 left.  Dodge started their final drive deep in their own territory due to a chop block.  But they would quickly move down the field and a touchdown pass by McNair with seven seconds left made it 14-13.  The Indians went for two.  Bleckley's defense held as the Royals clinched their first playoff berth since 2006 with a 14-13 win.

Ross had 82 yards on 18 carries.  Dytrez Nelson rushed for 50 yards on 14 attempts.  Bleckley's 204 total yards (138 on the ground) was their lowest output since a week two loss to Wilcox County.  They'll look to improve on that total as well as clinch the second seed at home versus Jefferson County November 5.  Kickoff is 7:30 pm and it will be senior night.
