Ga. Labor Department Closing Eastman Career Center

Unemployed people in the Eastman area will have to travel farther soon for job-hunting help.

The Georgia Department of Labor says it's closing seven regional career centers on July 1, including the one in Eastman.

"In order for us to keep more individuals more of our employees in the field which is where they really count most, we're going to have to make some cost-saving measures to continue to provide service for the money that we're still alloted," said Commissioner Mark Butler of the Georgia Department of Labor.

In a news release, they say people who use that office can get services at their Dublin office, about 32 miles away. The Eastman office serves people in Bleckley, Dodge, Wilcox and Telfair counties. They all have unemployment in the double digits.

Dodge's unemployment rate is at 11.2 percent. Bleckley's unemployment rate is at 12.2 percent and Wilcox is at 12.7 percent. Telfair County's unemployment rate is at 14.7 percent.

"We did close to 2,000 registrations for work for employment," said Lori Martel, Field Services Manager for the Department of Labor's Eastman office. "The entered employment for last year we did 834. That's 834 people that our little office put to work."

But they also say people should use their online services. Within a few weeks, they say, people can apply for unemployment services online.

But Wayne Whitehead of Eastman who goes to the office as a customer said he comes to the Department of Labor Office since October and said he hopes that the office doesn't close.

"People in Dodge County and Eastman," said Whitehead. "We rely on this place."

The 61 people who work in those seven offices will all be offered jobs in other cities, the state says.

After the closings, the department of labor will still run career centers in 46 cities, including Macon, Milledgevillle, Dublin and Warner Robins.

Also closing are offices in Blairsville, Camilla, Elberton, Kings Bay, the city of Monroe and Fort Oglethorpe.
