Bleckley baseball player overcomes obstacles to continue career.

Before Chandler Abney signed his letter of intent to play for Gordon State College baseball Thursday afternoon, BCHS head baseball coach Brad Davis shared a story of how Abney dove out of bounds for a loose ball during a pickup basketball game in sixth grade. Davis said it was an example of Abney’s heart. That same heart helped Abney earn the opportunity as he had Tommy John Surgery last year and missed games this season due to scar tissue. Despite those setbacks, Abney had a 1.000 fielding percentage this season. He’s a career .300 hitter who also had 18 RBI and scored 28 runs this season.

 

Cochran Bypass opening June 21.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced the Cochran Bypass, closed since April 25 of last year for a project which will tie an existing five-lane section of south Cochran with a four-lane section of north Cochran, will open to traffic June 21. Traffic will be shifted onto the newly rebuilt US 23/State Route 87 starting north of Foskey Road and extending onto Dykes Circle while SR 87 Business is tied into the newly widened highway. The detour is expected to last around 30 days.

Update on Bleckley All Star Teams.

The 8 and 10u baseball teams played in Dixie Youth Baseball district tournaments this past weekend.  While the season ended for 10u, 8u finished third and will host district June 29.  Girls softball is playing at the Hawkinsville Invitational.  Following a delay Monday due to weather, the 8, 10, and 12u teams played Tuesday and won.

The American Red Cross held a blood drive Monday in the County Extension Office main building.  Volunteers said the need for blood was critical with the start of hurricane season and one unit could save up to three people.  The next drive will be August 13.

Deadline for BCHS boys basketball camp extended.

The registration deadline for the Royals Boys Instructional Basketball Camp has been extended to June 15.  A registration form can be found by clicking here.

Girls All Star teams do well at Dodge tournament.

Girls All Star teams do well at Dodge tournament.

Both the 8 and 10u Bleckley All Star softball teams had a good weekend at the Dodge County Invitational.  The 8u girls finished second following a run through the loser's bracket to the title game.  They forced a second game against Hawkinsville but were tired playing their fourth straight game in high humidity.  BC will play at the Hawkinsville Invitational tomorrow at 5:30 pm.

The 10u girls had a dominant weekend, outscoring opponents by a combined 64-5 including a 16-2 win in the title game against Wilcox County.  They play Tuesday in Hawkinsville at 5:30 pm.
