Royals Fall to Fourth in Region

Bleckley was held to 109 total yards, 43 rushing, and gave up 243 rushing yards in a 35-0 home loss Friday to Jefferson County.  JCHS scored 14 points off of two Royal interceptions.  The loss ends BC's four-game win streak.  It also means BCHS will be the fourth seed in the upcoming state playoffs.

The Royals play at Lamar County (4-AA #1 seed) November 11.  Bleckley and Lamar have split their last two meetings with the Royals overcoming a 13-0 deficit to win 27-19 in Barnesville in 2010 and falling at home to the Trojans 27-21 this year.

Taylor County-Hawkinsville Game Ends in Fight

Butler's police chief says Friday night's Taylor County-Hawkinsville football game was called after opposing players got into a fight and the parent of a Butler player was arrested after tussling with police.

Chief Mike Peacock says a Taylor County player and a Hawkinsville player started fighting between plays.

According to Peacock, players from both teams ran onto the field and started fighting. He said Lee Harris, a parent from Butler, also ran onto the field.

Coaches and Butler police separated the players within minutes, but Peacock says Harris refused to leave the field.

Assistant Chief Jimmy Towns tried to arrest Harris, who resisted and fought back, injuring the assistant chief in the leg, according to chief Peacock.

Towns injured his leg when he and Harris fell to the ground. He spent the night at the Medical Center of Central Georgia with minor injuries and was released Saturday morning.

Teacher in Bleckley County Wins My Teacher is Tops

This week's My Teacher is Tops report takes us to Cochran where one forth grade teacher at Bleckley County Elementary school keeps her students learning by turning her Social Studies classroom into a game show.

"This is the best thing that I have ever had. Good gracious." says Bleckley County Elementary school teacher, Julie Pittman.

Forth grader, Haven Heath, wrote us a letter nominating her favorite teacher, Mrs. Julie Pittman.

Mrs. Pittman has been teaching for nine years but says that's not the path she first chose.  She went to college to become a counselor. "It didn't take me long to realize that it was easier to build a child than change an adult, so this is my way of trying to change the world by shaping these little minds and personalities." says Pittman.

She says every child is different and she tries to"zero in on what makes that child so special and try to highlight that each and every day."

Georgia's Energy Assistance Program Opens

Extra help is available from Georgia's Energy Assistance Program to those who meet minimum, need-based qualifications.

The first phase of Georgia's regular Energy Assistance Program opened Tuesday to assist homebound citizens and elderly households (65 years of age and over) pay their home heating costs.

The one-time payments average about $345 per household, and can go toward paying for gas, electricity, wood, coal, or kerosene heating.

The money goes directly to the power company or other energy supplier.

If funds remain available, other households who meet certain income criteria can apply for the program starting December 1.

The criteria is an income equal to or less than 60 percent of state median income guidelines.

Royals Clinch Playoff Berth With Win at Dodge

Royals Clinch Playoff Berth With Win at Dodge

Over the past three weeks, Bleckley's offense had been carrying the day.  They'd scored 30 or more points in each of those games.  However, a nasty Dodge defense combined with multiple injuries (Zack Moe was limited due to a deep thigh bruise, Frankie Mullis was recovering from a hip pointer, Mario McClendon was out with a sprained ankle, Tavon Ross played with an injured thumb) made for a defensive, turnover-filled first half.  BCHS had four first-half turnovers, Dodge three.

Brianna Carey's Broccoli Cheese Soup

1 32 oz. carton chicken broth
3 large potatoes diced (Yukon Gold with skin on is what I use)
1 cup chopped fresh broccoli (or 1 box frozen chopped broccoli)
2 cups milk
4 tbs. flour
1 lb processed cheese (Velveeta) cubed

Bring 1st 3 ingredients to boil and cook until potatoes are tender. Mix milk and flour together and stir until lumps are gone. Add to soup. Reduce heat to low and add cubed cheese. Allow Cheese to melt completely throughout before serving.

Variations: Instead of broccoli, add 1 can of corn and 1 cup of cooked cubed chicken for a hearty Chicken Corn Chowder. Or add 1-2 cups cooked cubed ham for Ham and Potato Soup. Or add 1 can crab meat and 1lb cooked shrimp for a delicious Seafood Chowder.

Enjoy!

BCHS One Act Wins Another Region Championship

BCHS One Act Wins Another Region Championship

Region 3-AA One Act Play Competition took place Thursday in Vidalia at Southeastern Technical College.  Bleckley County presented it's selection The Wiz during the day.  A little after 5 pm, results were announced.  Jessi Young (Dorothy), Maddie Smith (Toto), Erin Smith (Addaperle), Spencer Maddox (The Scarecrow), and Desmond Josiah (The Cowardly Lion) all were named to the All-Star Cast.  Phillip Odom (The Tin Man) and Chrinesha McRae (Evilene) were named best supporting actor and actress.  While the cast and parents who'd made the trip cheered at those results, the biggest cheer was yet to come.  For the eighth straight year, BCHS won the region championship.

State One Act Play Competition will be November 5 at Warner Robins High School.
