New Name for Merged Schools: Middle Georgia State College

Starting next January, thousands of Central Georgia students will be attending Middle Georgia State College.

That's the new name for the merged Macon State and Middle Georgia College.

The state board of regents approved the name change Tuesday.

The regents are also putting the new school on the track to university status.

That includes offering some master's programs beginning in fall 2014, if a regional accreditation agency agrees.

Macon state has campuses in Macon and Warner Robins. Middle Georgia College operates in Cochran, Eastman and Dublin.

This year they have a combined 9,100 students.

Here is the news release from Macon State:

Supporter, Opponent Discuss T-SPLOST

Interest and questions grow around a proposed one-cent transportation sales tax--or T-SPLOST--on the July 31 ballot.

It's predicted to generate more than $750 million for 11 Central Georgia counties over a ten-year period.

Those counties -- Bibb, Houston, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Twiggs, Crawford, Baldwin, Jones, Putnam, and Wilkinson -- will vote as a single district.

That means either they'll all approve it, or none of them will.

State Representative Bubber Epps supports the T-SPLOST and local Sierra Club spokesman Lindsay Holliday says he'll vote no.

Both joined Randall Savage in the 13WMAZ studio during Eyewitness News at 6.
