Eastman Orders Man to Remove Yard Signs

The city of Eastman has ordered a man to remove yard signs at his home protesting a nearby methadone clinic.

Police Chief Becky Sheffield says the signs in Robert Rooks' yard violate a city ordinance against signs in a residential area.

She would not answer further questions about the case, saying the order to cite Rooks came from Eastman City Hall. She referred questions to City Manager Bea Edge, who explained this is the first citation from this ordinance.

The ordinance says, "No billboard, sign board, or advertising sign shall be permitted as an accessory structure..."

The clinic, the Southeast Georgia Treatment Center, opened last year near the Dodge County Hospital. Methadone is used to help heroin addicts withdraw from the drug.
