Lady Royals Advance to Softball Elite Eight

Lady Royals Advance to Softball Elite Eight

Wednesday was the second straight time Bleckley had played in softball's Sweet 16.  Last year, the Lady Royals were swept in Hazlehurst by Jeff Davis.  This time, BC was at home.  Their opponent was Appling County.  The Lady Pirates eliminated Berrien County who entered the postseason ranked second in AA.

Game one was scoreless for six innings.  Both pitchers had managed to get out of jams including Marlee Bryan getting a strikeout in the fifth to end a bases loaded, two out situation in the fifth.  In the bottom of the seventh, Lana Maddox's two out single scored Kaylin Jones who had walked.  BCHS won 1-0.  Maddox finished 2 for 4.

Laney QB Leo myers rallied the Wildcats.  He conntected on a touchdown pass from a bounced ball and ha d  39-yard run to pu LCL (Lucy C Laney) ahead.  Bleckley  answered.  With 24 seconds left, a 28-yard field goal by Blake Lucas gave the Royals  38-36 win.  Ross ran for 177 on 24 carries.  Dytrez Nelson had 70 yards on 15 carries/  Both were part of a ground game that amassed 270 yards.

Winds Level Former Rochelle Church

Thursday night's high winds leveled a 100-year-old church building.

It's the former Kramer United Methodist Church, on Kramer Church Road near Rochelle.

The building was constructed in 1911, but not used as a church since 1988.

Owner James Lee said he used it for storage.

According to Captain Cody Beecher with the Rochelle Police Department, damage has ranged from trees down on side roads to damages to houses and vehicles.

High winds knocked over a gas pump at the Marathon station on Main Street. (see video)

"One man had a tree fall on his truck at the Morning Side Cemetery," Beecher said.

Beecher said he saw houses affected by the storm on Grady Street as well as Railroad Avenue.
