Middle Georgia State University mourns passing of faculty member.

Middle Georgia State University announced the passing of Dr. Franz Eitel, who died Monday. Eitel retired as Biology professor and Cochran campus horticulturist in 2004 but remained active at the university, auditing numerous courses in history, literature, art appreciation and geology. Eitel, 88, began the semester auditing a history course. The Registrar's Office confirmed he was MGA's oldest student. The University expressed their deepest sympathies to Eitel's family and friends in a statement.

Randy Simmons 1962-2013

STEPHEN RANDY SIMMONS, age 50, of Eastman, GA, died Thursday,

May 16, 2013, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, May 18, at Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Arnold Rye officiating.

Mr. Simmons was a native of Dodge County, a 27 year retired employee of Lithonia Lighting and an avid outdoorsman.  He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church and was a tool & die worker.  He was preceded in death by his Father - John F. “Duke” Simmons. 

J.C. Eckles 1927-2013

MR. JOHN COX “J.C.” ECKLES, age 85, of Eastman, GA, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM Thursday, May 16, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Peele officiating with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Bobby Moore 1936-2013

MR. BOBBY LEE MOORE, age 77, of Eastman, died Wednesday,

May 22, 2013, at Dodge County Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00PM Friday, May 24, at Woodlawn Cemetery, with Mr. Reggie Sheffield and Rev. Daniel Cook officiating.

Mr. Moore was a member of First Baptist Church, a veteran of the U. S. Navy and a retired employee of Robins AFB.  He was son of the late Thelma Louise Daniel Moore & Robert Lee Moore and was preceded in death by a

Sister – Betty Lott and 2 Brothers – David Moore & Ronald Moore.

Survivors:  Wife – Leola Bearden Moore of Eastman;  3 Sons – Keith Moore (Kathy), Ken Moore (Melinda) and Brian Moore all of Savannah; 

Mary Hodge


Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Hodge, 78, of Cochran who died Monday, April 1, 2013, will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 4:00 P. M. in the chapel of Fisher Funeral Home .

Mrs. Hodge was born in Bleckley County the daughter of the late Ernest and Allene Thomas Hobbs. She was a former employee of Lithonia Lighting Company. She attended Bethany Baptist Church and Ruth Baptist Church. A daughter, Dianne Hodge Brown, preceded her in death

Survivors include her children, Debra ( Mitchell ) Arnold of Cochran, Jackie    (Debby ) Maddox of Cary, Donna ( Karl )Brown of Cochran, Danny ( Teresa ) Hodge of Cochran; Sisters; Geraldine ( John ) Chapman and Teney ( Joe ) Martin all of Macon. Six Grandchildren and nine Great Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ira Lucas Lewis, 96, of Cochran who died Thursday, March 27, 2013, will be held  Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 4:00 P. M. in the Chapel of Fisher Fuhneral Home. with Rev. Jerry Peacock and Rev. Ryan Carnes officiating.                                                                                            

Elaine Jones Yawn


Services for Mrs. Elaine Jones Yawn, 92, of Cochran who died Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in Buford, Ga. will be held in the Chapel of Fisher Funeral Home on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 1:30 P. M. Rev. Ken Brooks officiating.

Elaine was born at home in Dodge County and lived in Cochran, Ga. She was retired from Warner Robins AFB in 1983 and from The Shoppers Guide. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cochran. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe B. Yawn Sr., and her daughter, Betty  Smith of Cochran.

Survivors include a daughter, Sherrian (Michael) Robinson of Buford, Ga.; son, Joe B. Yawn (Ernestine) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; son-in-law Dykes Smith of  Cochran; three grandchildren, Leslie Gheesling of Sugar Hill, Ga. (Michael), Michael Robinson and Jason Robinson, both of New York; three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren .

Visitation will follow the service on Saturday.
