Ruck March to Remember comes through Cochran

Ruck March to Remember comes through Cochran

On Wednesday, members of the 78th SFS from Robins AFB came through Cochran as part of the "Ruck March to Remember."  The march  commemorates the 10th anniversary of 9/11 as well as to honor air force secuirty forces lost since then.  The 2,181 trek began on July 12 in Texas and will end on September 1 at Ground Zero in New York.  Security forces from different bases along the route are handling each of the 15 legs.

The 78th's destination Wednesday was the Bleckley County Courthouse.  Their day's journey started outside Vienna.  As they came into view on Second Street, the BCHS Cheerleaders were there to shout words of encouragement (as well as hand out drinks.)   A table of snacks awaited the 78th on the courthouse lawn.   Bleckley reisdent Master Sgt. Shannon Blanton spoke briefly to the gathering thanking everyone for their support.

Bleckley Church League Softball Champion crowned Saturday

Softball was the name of the game around much of Bleckley County Saturday as the annual church league softball post-season tournament took place.

Fifteen teams from 11 churches in Bleckley (and Twiggs) counties played at three fields (Ruth Baptist Church, House Of Grace Church, and Limestone Baptist Church.)  The top team from each five-team tournament advanced to Ruth for the championship round.  It took two games for Ruth Baptist to advance.  Bethany Baptist (who lost to Ruth in the tourney opener for both teams) fought their way out of the loser's bracket to the field finale.  Along the way, they eliminated last year's champion, Mount Zion Baptist Church of Danville.

Sunday night, the annual prayer walk was held for Bleckley County schools.

People first gathered for a worship service at the BCHS gym where they heard praise music and message from New Life Church of God pastor Ryan Carnes.

The gathering was then dismissed as people spanned out  to all the campuses (BCHS, Bleckley Primary, Bleckley Elementary, and Bleckley County Middle School) to walk the hallways and pray for the upcoming school year.

Local church gives helping hand for new school year

Local church gives helping hand for new school year

Schools in Bleckley County begin August 11.  For the fourth straight year, New Life Church Of God provided a helping hand to families who might be struggling to get backpacks and other needed supplies for their children with "The Esther Project."

The project serves as church outreach.  Those receiving supplies pre-registered with the church last week.  Saturday, they came to New Life and presented volunteers with a ticket that had a number.  After matching up number and name, the participants would be escorted inside where all the children would get a backpack filled with supplies needed for that grade as well as an optional hair cut/hair wash.  The backpacks and other supplies came from church members and community donations.
