Middle Georgia Dog Rescue Center More Than it Appears

Middle Georgia Dog Rescue Center More Than it Appears

The Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation, located on MacThompson Road in Cochran is known for being a non-profit rescue that focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of shelter dogs.

But little do people realize that the GCRR offers more services than that.

Heather Zaresky, 29, who started the rescue and rehab nonprofit after working for years as a technician at a veterinarian's office in Atlanta and later in Cochran, announced this week that the GCRR offers grooming, boarding and a gift shop for canines (and dog lovers) as well.

Dog Stories Wanted

Dog Stories Wanted

Dogs are everywhere, and at one time or another, most people have had a dog in their lives or still do. A book is being compiled of dog stories, Becky Holland, retired Georgia newspaper journalist/freelance writer/blogger, is hoping to collect dog stories from all over the middle Georgia area.

Holland is a native of Bleckley County, and once was the sports and features editor of the Cochran Journal, and most recently served as the news editor of the Americus Times-Recorder and the lifestyle editor of the LaGrange Daily News. She currently writes for Examiner.Com, Kirkus Indie and a variety of other online and print publications.

Share your dog story by finishing the following sentence: "My dog has made/makes a difference in my life by ..." in 300 to 500 words, sharing real life experiences or memories. Be sure to include your dog's name, age, gender, breed, your name, age, location and how you got your dog.

Stella Needs a Home

Stella Needs a Home

Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation, a non-profit rescue that focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of shelter dogs, has several dogs that are ready for adoption and are looking for homes.

Stella is a very quiet Bichon Frise who needs a loving home. Stella, like all the dogs at GCRR, has been full 'vetted,' which means shots, microchipped and fixed. She came from an out of state shelter, and has a cataract in her right eye. A sweet personality, Stella may take a bit to warm up to her new owners, but once she does, it is certain that she will become a forever companion.

She is five years old and likes the quiet life.

Bleckley Writer Looking for Dog Stories

Bleckley Writer Looking for Dog Stories

There are a ton of books available today about dogs and their relationships with their human companions.

Most of these dogs have an extraordinary story or have done something extra special.  A local writer is looking for stories of everyday ordinary dogs from middle Georgia - stories of how the dogs have made a difference in the lives of their human companions, along with pictures of the dogs.

The stories will be collected from March 2012 to August 2012. E-mail rlhg4@bellsouth.net or visit the Facebook page.

Bleckley County dog is not typical

Bleckley County dog is not typical

Roger Caras once said, “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.”

And there is a family in Bleckley County who would agree, and after you hear the story of their canine, you will agree too.

Buddy weighs less than 10 pounds, but more than five. His coat is white and curly – almost reminiscent of the afro style made popular by the Jackson 5 in the 1970s.

And the Bichon Frise – a fancy term for a version of a poodle is a life-saving dog – hence the reason for this tribute.

His story began on April 1, 2008. Though his life really began in September 2009.
