Bleckley, Dodge, Pulaski Jobless Rates Released

Bleckley, Dodge, Pulaski Jobless Rates Released

The jobless rate for Bleckley in December 2012 was 14.6 percent, Dodge's was 11.5 percent and Pulaski's was 10.3 percent.

That's compared to Georgia's unemployment rate of 8.8 percent.

According to a state news release, unemployment rose to 9.2 percent from November's 8.7 percent rate, but it was down from December 2011 when the rate was 9.5 percent.

Officials claim the rise comes from a combination of factors, including a "slight increase" in new layoffs and a reduction in the area work force.

The uptick reflects a similar statewide trend. However, the jobless rate across Georgia only rose one-tenth of percentage point while metro Macon's rate jumped five-tenths of a percentage point.

Old Dodge County Jail Listed on Georgia Register of Historic Places

Old Dodge County Jail Listed on Georgia Register of Historic Places

What began as a desire for historic preservation and restoration has ended in triumph for a Dodge County landmark: the Old Dodge County Jail has been listed on the Georgia Register of Historic Places. Built in 1897, the Italianate brick jailhouse remains remarkably intact, with beautiful architectural details, a hanging gallows with trap door, and original cell furnishings.

Sponsored by the Dodge County Board of Commissioners, who submitted the nomination following the Old Jail’s listing on the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2010 Places in Peril, the application for listing on the Georgia Register of Historic Places was approved in January, 2011.

An application recommending the Old Dodge Jail for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places is in process, and should be submitted by the end of summer, 2012 with possible approval sometime in fall, 2012.
