Bleckley FFA Team Headed to Nationals

The Bleckley County FFA Enviromental-Natural Resources Team won the state Enviromental-Natural Resources Career Development Event held March 19 at the state FFA Center in Covington. 

Team members were required to complete a GPS course, an identification test, and written test covering water quality.  This marks the second time in four years Bleckley's FFA has won the competition. 

They will represent Georgia at FFA National Competition in October.  Nationals are held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

MGC to Hold 9th Annual Foundation Scholarship Gala

Middle Georgia College will hold its 9th Annual Foundation Scholarship Gala on Saturday, April 16.  A reception, dinner, and silent auction bidding will be held in Georgia Hall starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by an Ocmulgee Symphony Orchestra Concert in the Walker Hall Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. 

At 9:30 p.m. there will be a dessert reception in Georgia Hall with the Orchestra, and the auction winners will be announced. Combination tickets (for the Gala and the OSO Concert) are $60 per person and $40 per person for the Gala only.

Tickets for the Concert only are $30 per person. A limited number of V.I.P. tables of six will be available on a first come, first serve basis for $500 each, which includes complimentary wine for the table and V.I.P. seating at the Concert.

All proceeds will benefit the student scholarship program at Middle Georgia College. The event is black tie optional. 

Middle Georgia College to Celebrate Honors & Awards Day

Middle Georgia College will hold its 61st annual Honors and Awards Day on Thursday, March 31, at 10 a.m., in Morris Gymnasium on the Cochran Campus.

Students will be honored for excellence in academic and extracurricular achievement.

The public is cordially invited to attend.

BCHS Boys Quartet Places First at State Literary Championship

At the AA State Literary Championship held Saturday at Veteran's High School, the BCHS boys quartet finished first. 

The quartet was John Carr, Spencer Maddox, Phillip Odom, and Matthew White. 

Finishing fourth in state competition Saturday was girls trio (Erin Smith, Amber Burton, Logan Spivey) and Smith in girls dramatic interpretation.

Lady Royals Soccer Team Falls at Screven County

Playing their second straight game without a regular starter, the Lady Royals gave up four first-half goals and were shut out offensively as they lost at Screven County 6-0. 

Both teams return to action Tuesday versus Dodge County.  Game times are 5 and 7 p.m.

Census Data: What You Expected?

The United States Census data from 2010 was released Thursday. Bleckley, Dodge and Pulaski counties grew in population size.

Bleckley County grew 12 percent from 11,666 folks to 13,063.

Dodge County grew 14 percent. In 2000, 19,171 people were counted in the census. In 2010's census, 21,796 people were counted.

Pulaski County grew by 25 percent: from a population of 9,588  in 2000 to 12,010 in 2010.

Bleckley Loses Sub-Region Baseball Opener

After giving up six runs in the top of the first, a Cody Jones two-run home run capped a three-run rally to cut the deficit in half.  BCHS would get no closer as they began Region 3B-AA play with a 13-5 loss.  Jones was 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI.  Bryant Trice was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. 

The Royals play at East Laurens Thursday.  JV play at 4 pm with varsity to follow.
