FVSU & Wilkinson Chamber to Offer High School Business Conference

Fort Valley State University’s  (FVSU) Rural Business Outreach Institute (RBOI), in partnership with the Wilkinson County Chamber of Commerce, will host The “RBOI Apprentice” Business Conference at Wilkinson County High School. 

The goal of the conference is to provide students with an interactive and hands-on learning experience, according to a FVSU RBOI news release. 

“Students will have an opportunity to learn new business skills and will put them to use as they work in teams to create a new business venture,” says Arizona White, RBOI Program Coordinator.

The conference is scheduled for February 11.

Conference topics are scheduled to include:

1. Writing a business plan
2. Using technology to market a business
3. Powerful presentation skills

Rickenya Jenkins scored 15 points and Myesha Moore added 10 off the bench as the Lady Royals doubled up Twiggs County 54-27.  DeMario Beck had 15 points off the bench and was amongst four Royals in double figures as they beat the Cobras 78-48. 

Marcus Mack had 12 points, Vidal Nelson and Brentine Taylor added 10 each.

Bleckley plays at Swainsboro Saturday.  JV games tip at 3 p.m. with varsity to follow.

Career Fair for High School Students

Area high school sophomores will participate in a career fair Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at the Agricenter in Perry. 

The 15th annual Dr. Maxx Career Fair Scavenger Hunt will take place in the McGill Marketplace building from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m, a Houston County Board of Education news release says.

Approximately 1,000 students from Houston, Dooly, Peach and Pulaski counties will attend. 

The purpose of the event is to help students plan for their future. 

The career fair will inform them about job opportunities and the requirements for different occupations, providing insight into a variety of careers.

Though leading 16-15 after one, the Lady Royals offense had six-minute scoring droughts in the second and fourth quarters as they lost at Northside 50-35.  Kari Jenkins had 14. 

In the boys game, Northside took its first lead, 37-34 going into the fourth.  Down by 11, the Royals used an 11-2 run to get within two but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 59-54.  Brentine Taylor had 21 points.

BCHS plays at Twiggs County Tuesday.

A layup with nine seconds left proved to be the game winner as the Lady Royals lost to Dodge County 45-43.  Tyresha Williams had 15 points. 

The Royals used an 11-0 run in the third quarter to break open what was a six-point game as they won versus Dodge County 49-31.  Brentine Taylor had 19 points.  Ken Hughes added 10.

BCHS Cheer Coaches to Step Down

During recognition of this year's cheerleaders at Monday's football awards banquet, it was announced that Bleckley County High School Head Cheerleading Coach Bonnie Scarbrough and assistant coach Mi Waters would be stepping down at the end of the year.

The squad was informed of their decision in a meeting held earlier this month.  Scarbrough was a member of the 1994 squad that won Bleckley's first state title. 

In seven seasons as coach, Bleckley won one state title, one second-place finish at state, and four region titles.

Bleckley Students Named to Honor Band

Eleven Bleckley middle and high school students were selected through audition to participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Eleventh District Honor Band. 

They competed against students in both public and private schools from all classifications. 

Students selected will participate in the District Honor Band event held at Baldwin County High School on February 11 & 12. 

Honor Band members are:  Geena Smith, Elizabeth Thompson, Alondria Clemons,  Hannah DeLoach,  Kelby Dykes,  Kaitlan Allen, Amber Burton, Clarinet,  Justin Bates, Baritone Saxophone, Jasmin Allen, Ronald Leek, Euphonium, Zack Songer.

Smith, Thompson, DeLoach, and Dykes were also selected to participate in the South Georgia Region Honor Band held at Valdosta State University, April 14-16.
