GDOT awards grant for widening of US 23 between Bleckley, Dodge counties.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced the awarding of a $42.3 million dollar grant to Everett Dykes Grassing Co. for the widening of 9.5 miles of US 23 starting south of SR 257 in Bleckley/Dodge Counties going just outside Log Cabin Road in Eastman. The project calls for two, 12-foot lanes in each direction with a grass median. Anticipated completion time is October 31, 2021. The grant is related to the ongoing widening project of US 23/SR 87 starting above Foskey Road and going to Dykes Circle. It puts a grade separation at the Norfolk Southern Railroad and SR 87 by way of an overpass bridge. The project connects the existing five-lane section outside of Cochran with the four-lane section north of Cochran. Everett Dykes Grassing also received the grant for this $21.3 million project. Anticipated completion date is August 31, 2020.

GDOT suspending interstate lane closures for Labor Day weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Tuesday the suspension of interstate highway construction-related lane closures starting at noon September 1 through 5 am September 5 to help ease traffic congestion during the Labor Day weekend. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution as crews still may work near state highways and safety concerns could require some long-term lane closures to remain in place. Incident management or emergency, maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary at any time on any route. Dial 511 for CHAMP service.

Bleckley receives GDOT money for road improvements.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Friday that Bleckley County had been awarded a $250,000 contract that will place highway signs, striping and pavement markings on 67.64 county road miles. Money comes from the DOT's FY 2017 Off-System Safety Program, which focuses on low-cost safety improvements that are likely to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on “off-system” city and county routes.

GDOT suspending interstate-related lane closures for Fourth of July weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that construction-related lane closures on interstates would be suspended from noon on June 30 through 5 am on July 5. Lane closures will also be limited on state routes that serve major tourist and recreation centers. The moves come after AAA's Independence Day Travel Forecast predicted 85 percent of Americans, 37.5 million people, would be driving to get to their destination this Fourth of July. DOT awards money to Bleckley County for improvements.

The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $2 million dollar contract to Everett Dykes Grassing of Cochran as part of over $7 million for infrastructure improvements given out to Bleckley and other counties..  The contract calls for 6.664 miles of milling, plant mix resurfacing and single surface treatment paving on SR 26 from south of Old Milledgeville Road/County Line Road to SR 87. According to a release, the project has a March 2018 completion date. 

Portion of GA 87 Bypass in Cochran to close for construction April 25.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday that a portion of the GA 87 Bypass would be closed beginning April 25 to allow for bridge construction over the railroad. The closure will start at Frank Cook Rd and extend to the US 23/GA 87 intersection near Sugarberry's restaurant. Motorists will be detoured to GA 87 through downtown Cochran. Maximum detour time is one year.  The work is part of a project that will widen 4.361 miles of SR 87 into two, 12-foot travel lanes in each direction with a 14-foot wide flush median. 

DOT to restrict construction lane closures for next three weekends.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Tuesday plans that should help those who will be traveling for spring break as well as Easter. Construction related lane closures on interstates throughout Georgia will be restricted noon March 31 through 10 pm on April 2. Another restriction of interstate highway closures will take place starting at noon on April 7 through 10 pm on April 9. Lane closures on interstates and roadways near major tourist attractions, shopping centers, malls, and shopping districts will be limited during Easter weekend from 11 pm April 14 through April 16 at 11 pm.
